Patent losses threaten Irish recovery

"Dublin’s export-led economic recovery will face a big challenge in coming months as several blockbuster drugs manufactured in Ireland lose their patent protection, leading to steep cuts in prices and lower export volumes.
Five medicines manufactured in Ireland worth almost €30bn in combined annual sales in 2010 have just come off patent or are about to lose patent protection, in a move that is already hurting Irish exports.

Preliminary statistics published by Ireland’s national statistics office show that exports fell 9 per cent in December to €7.5bn, compared with November. "
