"Despite the rancor in Congress about federal spending, the Obama administration is still gung-ho about high-speed rail. So is the American public — Amtrak recently announced that more than 30 million passengers rode its trains during the last fiscal year — an all-time high. Ridership was up more than 5 percent compared to the previous year, despite large-scale weather disruptions that impeded travel across the country.
In May 2011 the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced $2 billion in high-speed rail investments, including $404 million for the Midwest and $795 million to improve heavily-used sections of the Northeast Corridor, which will increase train speeds from 135 to 160 miles per hour when completed. "
