"High energy costs can cripple an average New Englander’s budget. As an example, last year former Amesbury Mayor David Hildt and his wife, Kate Broughton, spent about $6,000 to heat their 1,800-square-foot house with a combination of oil, electricity, propane and a wood stove.
The couple moved into their 138-year-old home on Vine Street in 1998, and soon afterward had an energy assessment done, Hildt said, “but it was cursory.”
Recently they took advantage of the Mass Save Home Energy Assessment Program, which is available free of charge to all Massachusetts residents.
An energy specialist from Conservation Services Groups, a subcontractor of National Grid, spent five hours at their house analyzing every room, the attic, and the basement for energy consumption, as well as the appliances, water heating system, lighting, air sealant and insulation."
